I never thought I would see the day when a great catcher like Mike Scioscia would not be able to see talent when it showed its face. I cannot believe that he would sit Mark Trumbo in favor for Alberto Callaspo. I know that Mark Trumbo is a liability on defense at 3B, but he has Albert Pujols (who is more than qualified to play third), yet he thinks that benching Trumbo will help his team???????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You could play Trumbo at 1st base, Albert at 3rd, and Morales at DH. What in the hell is Scioscia thinking??????????????? Mark Trumbo has the offensive talent to lead the majors in HR, as well as bat 280, and steal 20 bases. Helloooooooooooooooo, you threw Mike Napoli away like he was garbage. When does the Angels front office realize that Mike Scioscia does not realize talent on the offensive end as well as he realizes fundamentals? Mike Scioscia should be fired for being an old school manager that does not want to play young talent. Shame on you Scioscia for being a Dinosaur in a league in the 21st century.

Corey, I agree moving Pujols to 3rd makes more sense than keeping Trumbo out of the lineup. However, there is no way the Angels were going to jeopardize their shot at Pujols by having a conversation about a position switch that he may not be in favor of. He’s a gold glove first baseman and an MVP candidate every season, if he’s going to move to 3rd it’s going to be because he volunteers, Scioscia is completely powerless until that happens.
I think that fielding is valued by “observationally-based” managers, because it is so much more obvious where fielding errors cost you a game. Since hitting is a longer process where the results aren’t as evident, and thus don’t have as much emotion attached to them, the defense gets overvalued. That may not be true, but it’s one way of deducing it.

I am just shocked that they have not figured out how to work him in the line-up more with Pujols’ ability to play 3rd/1st/DH, Trumbo 3rd/1st/DH, and Morales 1B/DH. They could sit Morales 1 game a week and Trumbo could play every day or at least 5 days a week. I think they will figure it out, but my concern is that they will not until it is too late. The way Scioscia has treated a few of the offensively talented players is puzzling to me. They could play Pujols at 3rd 3 times a week, 2 times at 1B, and 1 time at DH or flip the amount at 3rd with and first and you still come up with more playing time for Trumbo. Who knows maybe they trade him during the season. We shall see.
I agree with you entirely. They must be angry that they got rid of napoli now.
