“Tranquilo” – Draft Review: American League East

Logan Warmoth (TOR)

After going 22nd overall in the draft Warmouth won the Brooks Wallace Award given to the nation’s top college shortstop. The new Jays’ prospect is a well-proportioned athlete with the ability to hit for average power and also steal bases. There are concerns about his defensive outlook as some are skeptical of his arm strength, but the bat and athleticism will carry Warmouth regardless of defense. He is a polished college hitter that could move fairly quickly through the system and become an average everyday player that boosts fantasy owners’ ratios and adds double-digit home runs and stolen bases.

Tanner Houck (BOS)

576064da5e138.imageWith the 24th overall pick in the draft, the Boston Red Sox selected Tanner Houck, a big, broad-shouldered righty out of the University of Missouri. He carries 220 pounds on his 6 foot 5 inches tall frame and features a mid to high 90’s fastball with a plus slider with the changeup lagging behind as a fringe-average offering. The Red Sox were intrigued by Houck’s athleticism and ability to handle the workload of a college starting pitcher but there is a chance he ultimately ends up in the bullpen where two plus pitch mix profiles best.

DL Hall (BAL)dl-hall-2016-mj

Despite their inability to effectively develop starting pitchers the Orioles grabbed DL Hall with their – pick this year. Hall’s profile is oozing with upside and inherent risk of a long-term project. The lefty sits in the low 90’s with a fastball will peak up to 96 and is complemented by a power curve ball. He has also added a changeup that is a work in progress. Hall’s projectable frame leaves room for a bump in velocity which could turn Hall into a top of the rotation arm, and consistency and command will determine his long-term outlook.

Brendan McKay (TAM)

screen_shot_2017-04-25_at_9.34.38_pmMcKay was nothing short of spectacular this past season and was awarded the Dick Howser Trophy given to college baseball’s most valuable player. McKay, the only three-time John Olerud Award winner, continued to amaze scouts on both sides of the baseball. He finished the year with 17 home runs, 57 RBI, and a .343 batting average, and also pitched to the tune of a 10-3 record and 2.34 ERA with 140 strikeouts in 104 innings pitched. The Rays have said they will let McKay both hit and pitch and will let the results play out and McKay may become a pioneer of two-way baseball players along with Shohei Otani. How would you fantasy league handle this?

 Clarke Schmidt (NYY)

1uscsu13Schmidt signed an under-slot deal worth $2,184,300 with the Yankees this week who selected him 16th overall. The Yankees, with their stacked farm system, have the luxury of taking a long-term outlook on prospects and bought low on Schmidt who had Tommy John Surgery in May. When healthy, Schmidt features a mid to high 90’s sinking fastball, an above average slider and curveball, and an average changeup. This repertoire and his 6 foot 1 inch, 200-pound frame profile perfectly as a mid-rotation starting pitcher with the potential to peak at a number two, but this recent surgery adds increased risk and a long-term outlook. It’s high risk but high reward.
