The Future of Fantasy Football and Fantasy Sports as a Whole
I am here to let you fine people know that there are different, challenging, and more realistic versions of the game we all love. I will also raise many questions that may not make sense to you or irritate some.
When it comes to fantasy sports as a whole I have been an owner for 10+ years, and a league designer & commissioner for the better part of 7 years. A quick back story on myself is I am a financial professional by trade, a numbers junkie, sports junkie, and fantasy sports junkie. I analyze numbers in my professional career on a daily basis, and I am just as engaged in sports and fantasy sports. When I began playing football, or baseball for that matter, what I would do is first analyze the league structure and look for loopholes (ways to win without thinking). I would couple this approach with my sports knowledge and it made for a very effective formula. When I began playing, I would play in what’s called standard then standard ppr the next year. I grew very bored with this setup very quickly. Now, granted, times have changed since my first year in 2004. However, the nonsense in how these leagues are structured is still the same. Why does a QB only get 4 points for a TD? I have racked my brain for years trying to figure out why the NFL counts a QB TD as 6, but fantasy as 4. I have heard many arguments and they all make NO sense. Why is a turnover only worth -1 or rarely -2 in these leagues? Isn’t turnovers the most important stat in football? Why, why, why are these key items miscalculated? The answer is ignorance. If football games are hinged on these items, then why aren’t your fantasy football results hinged on the same?
What are the issues if you design a league with 10 teams (or 12 for that matter) in a standard league format (or standard ppr)? What does this do to the overall results? How does it overweight certain players?
These questions are easily answered and are common sense. In a standard league, if you lose one key player to injury during your match up one week, then your chances of winning that week (or your daily fantasy team) plummet. Lose him longer and you are screwed for the whole year. This is stupid.
In a standard league, if you do not have the top 3 or 4 players at each position, you can forget about competing for a title. How about bye weeks? Well, if you have 2 starters on a bye or more during a week, forget about that one. How about the lack of IR slots in most standard leagues forcing you to release key players if you want to compete week to week? How about facing an opponent that has 3 fumbles lost by the running backs along with 5 INTs and they still beat you because Calvin Johnson goes off for 200 YDs and 3 TDs? Does anyone see how ridiculous this really is?
Another issue is the draft. Try using an auction draft and a numbers cruncher like me will manipulate you all the way to the players I want. Does that have anything to do with Football? I thought we played Fantasy FOOTBALL? Not fantasy nerd-number-cheater hunting?
Does anyone else see the issue this type of league causes when it comes to activity? Well, you should. In this formula devoid of statistical logic, the chances I get a tougher opponent early when the season is just starting and then you get a lay down from the very same opponent late when this opponent has lost 5 of his first 6 match ups is almost a certainty. Huge, huge, huge issue.
It happens because there is NO parity structure in these leagues that compels competition. It is more important that fantasy football has this theme than any other sport. It is extremely important as well in baseball and basketball, but more so in football because of the limited number of games the NFL plays.
Why does fantasy football treat defense like it has ZERO impact on the outcome of a football game? Aren’t we all football experts? Shouldn’t we include these talented athletes in the scoring more appropriately? Would anyone be dumb enough to argue that the Seahawks won the Super Bowl because of their offense? That fantasy team Peyton had got slaughtered by a well designed defense and scheme. See my point?
Why do we completely throw out special teams almost altogether? Now, I am not including punters in this question. The last time I checked, guys like Patterson and McCluster were extremely valuable to their teams. If you asked Andy Reid how valuable McCluster was to the team he would slap you for asking a stupid question. Look at that guys total yards along with Patterson’s. Sick.
Now I will discuss daily fantasy football; the scourge of the fantasy football world. I can tell you from experience that playing this standard ppr points scoring nonsense is about as reliable as day trading in the stock market. Matter of fact, that’s exactly what it is. A good number of fund companies in the investment world use computer algorithms to make 10s of thousands of trades a second. What they are looking for is what is called “arbitrage.” To make that simple, they are looking for free money. Imagine being a day trader and trying to compete with that nonsense. Well, daily fantasy is the same thing, because now these slum lords have created tools to optimize your line ups for you. So, you aren’t even playing against an actual person most times. Real cute, but total BS. This whole daily revolution is destined to cannibalize itself from greed. The people who put this crap together don’t give a monkeys taint about the sport, they just want your money without having to work for it.
What is really happening when you use these types of organizations and league setups is you are missing out on what really makes this fun and a true competition. There are ways that you can strip out almost ALL of those issues I brought up. We have worked on it for 7 years. I am waaay more than willing to discuss the how.
We are actively seeking intelligent football minds to compete in our leagues. When I say “intelligent minds” I am NOT referring to people who cheat numbers, I am referring to people who KNOW the game. The real genius of our systems is that we have created an extremely complex scoring formula that actually makes your decisions more football oriented, as opposed to idiotic number BS that has ZERO to do with the game itself. What has turned most people of true football knowledge off from fantasy football is the lack of this type of approach. The fantasy football community has handed over the reigns of the game to idiots, people who know nothing of the game, and computer programs that basically destroy the real essence of the competition. Come play with us and enjoy the fun of testing your true fundamental football knowledge over a full season, while also enjoying the weekly decisions and roster moves that these stupid daily sites try to provide. You are welcome here!
I will leave you with this: A very talented and very intelligent writer from our site asked me tonight, I won’t say names (Chase Jacobs, Haha), “Why do you spend so much time working on this site, when you already have a great financial resource available?” Simply put to my good friend Chase, Love!
There is no passion without love and there is no progress without passion.
Contact me via email, which I have listed below, and we can pick up from there. I wish you well my fantasy football friends and I ask you take the opportunity to test your fundamental knowledge!
Thank you for your time,
Corey D Roberts
