“James Addiction” 2017 Mini Migration – Free Agent Cornerback Signings

Over the next three weeks I’ll be taking a look at some Cornerbacks, Safeties and Tight Ends who have changed locations in Free Agency, over the NFL Off-season, and how these moves may benefit your IDP Fantasy Football teams. First up are the Cornerbacks, and while the list of corners who changed teams isn’t terribly long, there were some notable moves.

A.J. Bouye (Jacksonville Jaguars) – Bouye was perhaps the top corner available in free agency, after a breakout year with the Texans. By pairing him with Jalen Ramsey in the Jaguars’ secondary the Jaguars hope to and should have one of the top secondaries in the league. Bouye only accounted for one interception, but did have 16 Passes Defended and was the Texans’ top corner in 2016. Starting opposite Jalen Ramsey his stats should jump a bit this season as teams likely won’t game plan away from his side of the field with an equally strong corner on the opposite side.

Morris Claiborne (New York Jets) – Claiborne finally showed some of the potential the Dallas Cowboys saw in him when they moved up to the 6th spot in the 2012 draft to take him this past season. However, he again missed time (9 games) due to injury. If he is able to stay healthy this year for the Jets, opportunity alone will make him an above average corner in IDP leagues. The Jets are rebuilding and the defense will be on the field a ton. If Claiborne plays with the same form as he did last season he will definitely surprise.

Micah Hyde (Buffalo Bills) – Hyde played the slot corner position last season for Green Bay, but Buffalo plans to use him in a hybrid corner/safety role. If Hyde is listed as a corner in your league he is definitely a good addition to your team. Last season Green Bay also lost their slot corner, Casey Hayward, who went on to have one of the best seasons among all corners` for the Chargers.  Hyde could find similar success in Buffalo. He is an above average tackler and will be paired with Jordan Poyer taking over for Corey Graham and Aaron Williams. Of the two, Hyde is much more likely to achieve the success Corey Graham has two seasons ago.

Stephon Gilmore (New England Patriots) – Gilmore has not lived up to his billing over the last few seasons.  But he  should find more success in New England where the scheme protects players more than on most teams. Logan Ryan who has moved on to the Titans is a perfect example, and Gilmore will step into Ryan’s old position with the team. Malcolm Butler is the better corner which means Gilmore will be thrown at often, and in the Fantasy Football realm Gilmore could have his best season.

Nickell Robey-Coleman (Los Angeles Rams) – Robey-Coleman will take over Lamarcus Joyner’s position at slot corner.  Robey-Coleman is undersized at 5’8″ but competes, and allowed only a 74.86 passer rating while in the slot, which was 2nd best in the league. He also earned a higher grade from Pro Football Focus than teammates Stephon Gilmore and Ronald Darby at the corner position. With the Rams in the midst of their rebuilding process, Robey-Coleman will also see plenty of field time.

Other names to keep an eye on, mostly because of past success: Logan Ryan (Tennessee Titans), Brandon Carr (Baltimore Ravens), Kayvon Webster (LA Rams) and Jason McCourty (Cleveland Browns).

I’ll be back next week with a look at the safeties who have changed teams in free agency this off-season. For the most part, this is a well-known group including Barry Church, Johnathan Cyprien, Antoine Bethea and Tony Jefferson. However, there are also some lesser names who may have landed in the right situations.

I grew up a Dallas Cowboy's fan in Washington Redskins' country, but I currently reside in Florida. I have played fantasy sports since 1999, but have narrowed it down to football only over the last few years. I have a beautiful daughter that keeps me busy and feeling young, and in my free time I write for Major League Fantasy Sports, play golf and spend time on outdoor activities.
